We received a 2017 21-inch iMac for repair under RepairID #2439 because the machine attempted to load but failed halfway through the process. Our initial inspection revealed that the Apple logo would appear, but the system would not even attempt to finish loading. Although the SSD in this unit had been replaced two to three years prior, we suspected a hardware failure and booted from our service system to verify the drive’s health.
Identifying Low-Quality SSD Failures
Upon testing, our service system immediately indicated that the SSD was failing. The 2.5-inch drive inside was a low-quality Silicon Power SSD, which we often find failing prematurely in these models. Remarkably, the drive had only 1,700 power-on hours and approximately 70GB written to it before it reached a failed state. While this would ideally be a warranty failure, claiming such a warranty after two years is rarely successful

Opening this iMac required extreme care because the screen had been opened previously and reseated with non-original tape. We successfully separated the screen and confirmed that the internal glue was not holding properly, which had left the screen at risk of falling off. After removing the failed Silicon Power drive, we cleaned the internal fan, which was in good condition, and removed the old adhesive residue.
Installation of High-Quality Micron SSD

To ensure a lasting repair, we replaced the failed drive with a high-quality Micron-based SSD made in Mexico. We applied new professional glue tape and performed a final check to ensure the screen turned on correctly before sealing the unit. After initializing the new disk with the APFS file system, we began the installation of macOS Sonoma. The machine is now restored to its full performance standards.
