Diagnosing a Dead 15-inch MacBook Pro
We received a 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro (model A1990) that was completely unresponsive and would not turn on. Initial diagnostics showed that while the machine accepted 20 volts from the charger, the current draw was fluctuating between a very low 0.03 and 0.06 amps. Upon opening the device, we identified visible liquid damage and corrosion near the screen connector and the backlight area.

To find the exact culprit, we examined the board under the microscope to identify the specific failure points. We discovered that the liquid ingress had caused oxidation, leading to several shorted capacitors in the backlight circuit. These shorted components were preventing the logic board from pulling the necessary power to complete its boot sequence.
MacBook Pro 15″ A1990 Logic Board Surgery – Shorted Capacitor Replacement

During this specialized logic board surgery, we performed a thorough cleaning to remove all traces of oxidation and residue. Therefore, we used our microscope to precision-solder and replace the faulty capacitors and a damaged resistor.

Repairing this specific board was essential because the SSD chips are soldered directly to it and encrypted by the T2 security chip. If the board is replaced instead of repaired, the customer loses all their data.

Before reinstalling the board, we addressed significant dust buildup within the fans and chassis. Dust creates an environment for corrosion and component overheating, so a full internal service was performed. Once the logic board surgery was complete and the system was cleaned, the MacBook showed a healthy charging current of 1.4 amps, confirming the battery was receiving power.
Restoring Power and Saving Customer Data

Once the repair was finished, we reassembled the MacBook and performed a successful power test. The device immediately started booting up and reached the login screen, proving the short was successfully cleared. Because the board was repaired, we were able to perform a full backup of the system to ensure all customer data was safe.
Additionally, we verified that the screen and Touch Bar were fully functional after the intervention. Because we addressed the shorted capacitors and corrosion effectively, we were able to bring this 2019 MacBook Pro back to life while keeping the data intact. This successful repair highlights the importance of professional logic board surgery for saving both the machine and the data.
