We are working on an Asus Zenbook today. This laptop arrived with a crack on the right edge of the screen. Interestingly, this crack occurred because the hinge support snapped from its place. It then leaned toward the screen glass and cracked it.

We took the screen apart from the back cover and saw the design flaw immediately. The manufacturer merely glued the hinge support into the back cover. They should have milled or welded it instead.

The assembly uses two different composites. One is metal, while the other is aluminum. Glue cannot bond these materials together properly. Consequently, this is another example of how these laptops fail within a couple of years. Once one part fails, it damages other components, which aims to make the device nonviable for repair.

Our Correct Hinge Repair Process

We saw how unreliable the original glue is. Therefore, we prefer to repair the hinge once and for all. This ensures it lasts longer than any other part of the device. Our go-to method involves drilling through the hinge support and the back cover. By using this technique, we run aluminum rivets through the back cover. This makes the structure significantly more reliable. Most importantly, it protects the chassis against the stress caused by stiff, unserviced hinges.

Stiff hinges are the main reason why this issue happens. We can avoid this through regular maintenance. Factory grease inside the hinges eventually mixes with dust. Over the years, this mixture makes the hinges incredibly stiff. Because they consist of thick metal, the hinges do not snap. Instead, the hinge support receives the most pressure.

Continuous usage in an unserviced state eventually snaps the support. This specific model used industrial glue. However, the glue could not withstand the force generated by the stiffened hinges. Therefore, regular servicing is vital for these Zenbook models.
Repair Outcome for the Cracked Screen
Unfortunately, we also had to deal with the aftereffect of the hinge failure: the broken screen. Due to budget constraints, the customer chose not to replace the panel. Consequently, we disabled the touch screen functionality and left the crack as is.
With our professional tools for dealing with hinge issues and broken screens, separating the cracked edge was not an issue. We managed to prevent the crack from increasing. This kept the screen usable for the customer. Finally, the customer received a fully repaired Asus Zenbook with a reinforced hinge support.
