Common hinge failure of 2-in-1 laptops

We received a Dell 2-in-1 laptop for repair under RepairID #2347. This device arrived at our workshop with a common structural failure where the right-hand hinge support had completely snapped. Although the back cover of this model is made of aluminum, the internal support holding the hinge is unfortunately made of plastic. This plastic had ripped apart entirely, causing the chassis to open up whenever the lid moved. It is a poor design where a heavy-duty metal hinge is mounted to a fragile plastic support and then glued to an aluminum cover.

To identify the root cause, we inspected the hinge mechanism. We found that the hinges had become extremely stiff due to a buildup of dust and heat over time. This stiffness placed excessive torque on the plastic mounting lugs, eventually pulling them away from the lid. Consequently, the plastic became too bent and deformed to be repaired with glue alone.

Drilled and Riveted Structural Fix

During this specialized Dell 2-in-1 hinge repair, we decided to create a permanent metal-to-metal connection. Firstly, we used a 3mm drill bit to drill directly through the metal hinge and through the aluminum back cover. This approach allows us to bypass the failed plastic entirely. Secondly, we ran 3mm aluminum rivets through these newly created holes to secure the assembly.

Interestingly, we purposely leave the steel center pins inside the rivets. This specific technique provides significantly more sturdiness to the joint. This creates a “sandwich” effect that clamps the hinge directly to the aluminum lid for a rock-solid finish. Furthermore, we serviced the hinges with WD-40 and loosened the tension nuts. This ensures they move freely and prevents the high torque from damaging the new rivet mounts in the future.

Dell 2in1 Hinge Repair – Stronger than a new one
Once the structural riveting was complete, we performed a final check on the chassis alignment. We only used a tiny amount of glue at the very end to secure a small plastic clip for purely cosmetic reasons. After reassembling the laptop, the screen opened and closed perfectly with no stress on the chassis. The separation was completely gone, and the lid moved smoothly through its full range of motion.

Because we used aluminum rivets to bridge the connection, the repair is much stronger than the original factory design. This successful restoration proves that professional structural engineering can overcome manufacturer design flaws.
