Diagnosing a Water Damaged 2020 MacBook Air

A2337 Liquid Damage Repair

We received a 2020 MacBook Air A2337 for repair under RepairID #2359. This device arrived at our workshop completely unresponsive due to liquid damage. Upon opening the machine and looking at the board, we immediately spotted liquid residue on the circuitry. This moisture caused a total system failure, leaving the device unable to turn on.

To identify the fault, we performed a thorough inspection of the board’s sensitive areas. Our analysis focused on the region around the T2 security chip and the battery charging circuit. We discovered that a MOSFET in the battery charging circuit had been submerged in liquid. Consequently, we used our microscope to examine corroded areas and locate and replace failed components.

Addressing the Short Circuit and Corroded Components

A2337 Liquid Damage Repair

During this specialized A2337 liquid damage repair, we identified a corroded chip that was no longer making proper contact with the logic board. The corrosion from the liquid spill effectively created a short circuit, preventing the machine from functioning. Therefore, we performed precise component-level work to clean the affected areas and restore the electrical connections.

Interestingly, the base cover showed very few signs of liquid marks. This confirms that even a small “splatter” of liquid can be enough to bridge critical traces and cause the entire machine to “die”. Furthermore, despite the severity of the short, we prioritized data preservation. As an insurance policy, we successfully extracted and recovered the customer’s data during the repair process.

Repairing the corroded area and replacing the faulty capacitor

Once the corroded capacitor has been replaced and the board was cleaned from residue, the MacBook immediately began pulling current. Once we the system start turning on and firing up. We verified that the trackpad was functioning correctly and that all system indicators were back to normal. Additionally, we performed a keyboard test to ensure no damage had occurred to the keys, as there were no signs of liquid on the keyboard itself.

Because we acted quickly on the signs of liquid damage, we were able to prevent permanent board failure. This successful restoration proves that even when a device appears completely dead due to a spill, precision electronics work can bring it back to life.

Repaired, not Replaced!

We are committed to reducing e-waste in Australia. We do it by educating our customers on the reparability and longevity of their devices, as well as providing affordable Laptop and Macbook Repairs here in Adelaide.
Although our best intentions and hard work, this is not an easy task. Customers must accept that cost of high-quality electronic repairs is between a third and half of the price of a new device. However, with the current trend of planned obsolescence in electronic design, we see more and more Laptops having shorter lifespans. To tackle that, while we do our repairs, we target common planned obsolescence engineering design mistakes to ensure we extend the life expectancy of the Laptops we Repair. Check some of our Repair Cases to get an idea of the process.

That said, if we buy a new one or write it off via insurance, it does not guarantee that the new one will not meet the same fate as the older one pretty soon.

Quite often, we see accidents reoccurring within less than 2-year gaps. So if we can save 2000$ or even 1000$ today by repairing our faulty Laptop or Macbook is brilliant. That’s an extra half cost of a Device, ready to be spent on another one. If the time comes or our need for performance changes.
When that time comes is up to us to buy a new one or keep pushing the one we have, but delaying it by a year or three is always a good starting point and saves another abandoned Laptop or Macbook from polluting our only Planet.
