Diagnosing a Dim Screen on a 15″ MacBook Pro

We received a MacBook Pro A1707 for repair under repairID #2340. This 2018 15″ model arrived with a common backlight failure, often referred to as “Flexgate.” Initially, the screen appears completely black to the naked eye. However, when we shine a flashlight onto the display, a faint image of the login screen becomes visible. Consequently, this symptom confirms that the LCD is functioning, but the backlight system has failed.

To identify the exact cause, we inspected the display assembly under a microscope. We quickly identified a small crack on the backlight flex cable. This typically happens because the original cables were designed slightly too short. Therefore, as the laptop opens and closes over time, the cable crimps and eventually fractures.
Precision Micro-Soldering and Cable Extension

When faced with this issue, owners usually have two options. They can either replace the entire display or opt for an A1707 Flexgate repair. In this case, we recommended the cable repair. Replacing the full assembly is often 2-3 times more expensive than our specialized restoration service. Furthermore, a new screen might eventually suffer the same design flaw if the cable length is not addressed.
Repairing the screen requires us to extend and solder the flex cable using incredibly thin materials. We use 0.1mm copper wire to recreate each broken trace one by one. During this process, we constantly test for conductivity to ensure a stable electrical path. By meticulously bridging these gaps, we restore full power to the backlight LEDs.
Securing the Repair and Correcting Design Flaws

Once the traces are rebuilt, we apply a specialized UV solder mask. This coating insulates the new connections and prevents short circuits. Additionally, we use reinforced tape to secure the cable permanently. Most importantly, we fix the original manufacturing fault by extending the cable to the correct length. This extra slack prevents future creasing and ensures the A1707 Flexgate repair lasts for the remaining life of the device.

Because we perform this at the component level, your data remains completely safe and untouched. This targeted approach avoids the high costs and waste associated with standard service centre part-swapping.
Successfully Repaired MacBook Pro Backlight

Once the micro-soldering was finished, the MacBook Pro display fired up with full brightness. We performed a comprehensive stress test by opening and closing the lid at various angles. This verified that our extended cable remains flexible and durable under daily use. This successful restoration proves that precision engineering can overcome even well-known manufacturing defects.
