We are repairing a 2022 MacBook Pro model today that is failing to turn on. The device is currently cycling on the power connector, fluctuating between 5 volts and 20 volts at 0.2 amps. This cycling behavior on the power supply usually indicates an internal short circuit, which often occurs due to liquid damage.
Identifying Internal Damage
Upon opening the machine, we immediately identified liquid exposure and oxidation on the right edge of the logic board. This damage is located dangerously close to the CPU main traces. After extracting the board for further inspection, we discovered a serious “explosion” and severe oxidation in the affected area.
Logic Board Stabilization
Our technical analysis pinpointed a failed backlight IC chip with two damaged pins. We successfully removed this shorted chip, which stabilized the board’s power consumption. The machine began pulling a turning-on current of 0.15 to 0.16 amps, confirming that the board was now in a functional power state despite the lack of a backlight.
Data Recovery Process
Because this is a data recovery case, we prioritized securing the information over sourcing a replacement chip. By utilizing the HDMI port for external output, we successfully reached the operating system and confirmed the 1TB flash storage was accessible. We initiated a Time Machine backup to ensure the customer’s data was safe. This step is critical because modern MacBook SSDs are physically soldered to the board and encrypted, requiring the original hardware to be functional for data extraction.
Technical Challenges
The repair faced significant hurdles due to completely dissolved pads on the logic board and damage to the I2C communication lines. Furthermore, the specific Renesas backlight chip is difficult to obtain due to manufacturer embargoes. While we eventually sourced a chip to attempt a hardware restoration, our primary success was bringing the board to a state that allowed for complete data recovery.
